There’s something truly magical about your first pair of pointe shoes: the satin shine, the perfect fit, and the excitement of stepping into a new chapter of your dance journey. But before you can take that first beautiful rise onto pointe, there’s one important step: sewing your pointe shoes!
At Duck Feet Dance, we know how special this moment is. Whether you’re preparing your very first pair or replacing a well-loved favorite, sewing your ribbons and elastics correctly ensures your shoes fit securely and support you beautifully.
🧵 What You’ll Need:
Before you begin, make sure you have:
Ribbons – 4 pieces, about 22" each
Elastic – 1 piece for each shoe (1–1.5" wide)
Strong thread – cotton or dental floss
Needle, scissors, and a lighter or clear nail polish to seal ribbon ends
Optional: Thimble for extra finger protection
✨ At Duck Feet Dance, your ribbons and elastics are included free of charge with every pointe shoe purchase. And if you need supplies, we carry a convenient Pointe Shoe Stitch Kit in-store: complete with thread, needles, and all the essentials to make sewing quick and easy!
💡 IMPORTANT!
Ask your dance teacher to double-check your sewing before your first class — each school may prefer a slightly different placement.
Keep a stitch kit in your dance bag for quick repairs or adjustments before class or performance day.
Step 1: Mark the Placement
Ribbons:
Fold the heel of your shoe forward until it touches the insole — this shows where the shoe naturally creases.
Mark that crease on the inside.
Sew your ribbons just slightly forward of this line, angled toward the heel.
This angle allows the ribbons to hug your arch comfortably and hold the shoe in place.
Elastics:
You can choose your elastic style depending on what feels best for your foot:
Across the heel: classic support.
Crisscrossed: extra stability for narrow heels or flexible arches.
Sew each end just inside the heel seam, angled slightly forward for comfort.
Step 2: Sew It Up
Fold about ½ inch of the ribbon or elastic before sewing to prevent fraying.
Use small, tight whipstitches around all sides.
Avoid sewing through the drawstring casing — this can affect the shoe’s fit.
Test your shoe after sewing one side to check placement before finishing the other.
Step 3: The Finishing Touch
After sewing:
Seal the ribbon ends with a lighter or clear nail polish to prevent fraying.
Try your shoes on and wrap the ribbons to check for a snug, comfortable fit.
Adjust as needed — every foot is unique!
